  • The Smashing Pumpkins' April 27, 1994 performance was an unannounced surprise show for the venue's reopening, closed since 1989 after sustaining damage during the Loma Prieta earthquake.
"The speaker column fell over and smashed about three of James's guitars. And we were told, we were given this great distinction, you will be the band that would re-open the historic venue that hosted Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead and you're like, "Great." Soma
Rocket
Geek U.S.A.
Corgan: Thanks a lot.
Disarm
Today (abandons after wrong chords, then restarts)
Cherub Rock
Corgan: Thanks, thanks a lot.
Drown
Hummer
Corgan: Thank you very much. Well, the spirit of Jimmy Hendrix must be here because my guitar cannot stay in tune, just like Jimmy.
Iha: But at least he didn't have [unintelligible] smashing him, killing all of his guitars.
Corgan: We'd like take this opporutnity to thank all the opening peoples. Thank you all you numerous peoples who opened today. We wish we could participate in more, [to crowd] shut up, I wish we could participate in more eclectic bills. Unfortunately everyone wants to put more rock over here. Sorry that's the way it is. We only have one rule, the only rule we have is we don't requests. We are not a bar band.
Luna
Siva
Intermission...
Corgan: Once again, we do not take requests, but thank you anyway. We're going to attempt to play a song in tune, the listening experience is usually a lot more pleasant when the song is in tune. [Plays opening chords of Silverfuck] Thank you very much. This next song... oh everything hurts, my finger, my throat, my back, knees. The cabinets fell off and broke James' guitar.
Iha: And almost killed one of our crew people. I thought it destroyed all of my guitars, but [unintelligible] found out. I'll try to be more happy now. It's just, the sudden death of someone and all of my guitars smashed... I don't know. Let's rock.
Corgan: Why don't you tell everyone how much you loved that guitar. I think we should do a little eulogy for the guitar, I think we should do a little eulogy for the guitar.
Iha: I loved it a real lot. I can't even look at it.
Corgan: Come on, bring it out.
Iha: This, is a limited edition guitar that we used on our last record. Thanks for the proper placement of the...
Corgan: As used on Siamese Dream.
Wretzky: This was James' favourite guitar.
Corgan: I think we should all have a moment of silence for the guitar... [pause] Thank you.
Wretzky: Don't cry, James. We'll buy you another one.
Corgan: Maybe Stach [?] can lend you a [unintelligible]
Iha: It was a friend of mine, now it's dead.
Silverfuck ending with segue into tease of Over the Rainbow
Intermission...
We don't believe in drum solos. If you want to watch somebody masturbate go to a...something. Jimmy will masturbate on the bus later. We don't do drum solos, what kind of English do you want me to say it in? [Spanish] No drum-o solos. [German] Neine sprechen the drum. [Spanish] This is our last "selecion", thank you very much for coming. We hope the rest of your acid trip goes as well.
Starla
Wretzky: Thank you for coming.
